Connect Razorpay step by step
You do this once, in test mode first, so you can place a practice purchase with fake money before any real learner pays. Razorpay gives you separate keys for test mode and live mode, and a Key ID from one mode never works with a secret from the other.
- In the Razorpay Dashboard, switch the mode toggle to Test mode, open Account & Settings, then API Keys, and press Generate Key.
- Copy the Key ID and the Key Secret straight away. Razorpay shows the secret only once; if you lose it, generate a new key.
- In your TEACHNIQ admin open Settings, then Integrations, then the Payment Gateways tab, and click the Razorpay card to open it.
- Paste the Key ID and Key Secret and press Save and activate. The secret is kept on the server and is never sent back to your browser.
- Add the webhook so Razorpay can tell TEACHNIQ a payment went through even if the learner closes the page early. In Razorpay open Account & Settings, then Webhooks, then Add New Webhook. Paste the webhook URL shown on the Razorpay card, type a long secret of your own, and tick the events for payment captured and payment refunded.
- Paste the same secret into the Webhook secret field on the Razorpay card and press Save and activate again.
- Price a product, place a test purchase, and check it appears under Transactions. When you are happy, repeat the keys and the webhook in Live mode. Test and live mode have separate webhooks.
Put a price on something
Every product type uses the same Pricing tab: courses, bundles, communities, digital products and webinars. Until a gateway is connected, the tab shows a warning with a Set up payment gateway button and will not save a paid price. Free prices and buy links work as normal.
- Open the course, then its Pricing tab.
- Click the One-time card (or Free). Enter the amount and choose the currency.
- For a course or bundle, choose access: Lifetime, By duration (a number of days, weeks, months or years) or By date.
- The dialog shows a live line starting "Buyers see", so you can check the price before saving.
- Open the menu on the price row to Make default or Copy buy link. A product can have several prices, and each one has its own buy link.
What your learners see
A checkout on your own academy address, in your colours and with your logo. It shows your academy name, the product type, the product name and one price line. A new buyer types an email, name and password; a learner who is signed in sees their details already filled in. Courses and bundles let a new buyer create an account while paying, while communities, digital products and webinars need a signed-in learner.
The order summary shows the total, with an Add a coupon code link that opens a box for a code. The Pay button opens Razorpay's payment window on top, with the methods you enabled in your Razorpay account, which for most Indian accounts includes UPI apps, cards and net banking. Once the payment is confirmed the product unlocks in the learner's library.
Worked example: a Rs 1,999 course paid by UPI
- Course price you set
- ₹1,999
- Coupon you created (₹200 off)
- -₹200
- What the learner pays by UPI
- ₹1,799
- What Razorpay keeps
- Its own processing fee, set by Razorpay for your account and payment method
- What reaches your bank
- ₹1,799 minus Razorpay's fee, on Razorpay's settlement schedule
- What you see in TEACHNIQ
- A paid order under Transactions, and the course unlocked for the learner
Payment provider fees vary by method, by account and over time, and they are set by the provider, not by TEACHNIQ. Check the exact figures in your Razorpay dashboard before you set your prices.
No commission from TEACHNIQ on top
TEACHNIQ adds no commission to this sale. You pay your plan price, and Razorpay charges its own processing fee.
What you can sell this way
- Courses with lifetime access, an access window, or access until a date.
- Bundles of courses, billed once or on a schedule.
- Paid communities billed monthly, quarterly or yearly.
- Webinars with a free or one-time registration price, and digital products such as ebooks, templates and files.
- Coupons for courses, bundles, communities and digital products. A coupon can be a percentage or a fixed amount, limited by uses and dates, and can carry an offer timer so the discount is held for a learner for 5 to 30 minutes. Webinars and subscription purchases do not take coupons.
Refunds and records
You refund a payment in your Razorpay dashboard. As long as the webhook includes the refund event, the refund shows up in TEACHNIQ automatically, and you can then choose what happens to the learner's access. Open Transactions to search and filter your sales, see the buyer, the order and the gateway reference for any row, export the rows you are looking at as a CSV, and download an invoice for any paid order.
The Help Center article "How do I connect Razorpay?" walks through the same steps with screenshots, and "A learner paid but has no access: what to do" is the first place to look if a payment and an unlock ever disagree.
Common mistakes and how to avoid them
- Pricing in another currency without switching on international payments in your Razorpay account first. Those payments will fail until you do.
- Expecting a UPI option that you have not enabled in Razorpay. The checkout shows exactly the methods that are on in your account.
- Wanting subscriptions without enabling Subscriptions in your Razorpay account. Recurring billing needs it there as well.
Selling outside India too
You can connect Stripe as well and set prices in a currency your learners know, such as US dollars, so learners abroad pay by card. An academy can connect several payment gateways and choose which one is the default. See the page on selling in your learners' currency for how prices and currencies fit together.
